SQL Buddy Review
phpMyAdmin is a great tool for managing your databases. But why does it have to work and look a tank? I understand it would rather be more functional that up to date with current website trends. But what about those of us who are out of the stone age and have moved on from Internet Explorer?
That’s where SQL Buddy comes in. SQL Buddy is an online database manager that you install on your own server. Well, by install I mean you simply upload the files, and you’re good and go. And unlike phpMyAdmin, it’s quite intuitive, with up to date tools running it.
Where SQL Buddy leaps head of phpMyAdmin is it’s elegant design and overall interface. SQL Buddy is a very elegant looking piece of work. It’s simplistic, and get the job done in a minimalistic manner. SQL Buddy also integrating a powerful JavaScript frameworks, so, for example, when submitting queries, SQL Buddy uses Ajax to submit them, which work really well, and allows you to continue working without pause. Another example, when edited multiple rows from a database, you can submit each change individually without having the load a new page.
Another thing that I feel is worth mentioning is its installation. All there is to it is uploading the files. You don’t have to edit any files, or go through a step by step installation when it’s uploaded. Once it’s uploaded, it’s good to go.
One feature I would like to see is maybe some sort of options page. As it is, the only things you can change with SQL Buddy is the language and theme. It would be nice to see a section with options like setting the maximum number of rows per page, and little things like that. Another thing that would be nice to see is more support for themes. As it is, SQL Buddy comes with two themes, and after doing a few Google searched, can’t find any others elsewhere. Don’t get me wrong, the two themes included are great, but it would still be nice to see more.
I also like not having to go through my cPanel to get to SQL Buddy (unlike phpMyAdmin). You can place it anywhere on your website, and simply access it via the URL. Go figure!
