This was an assignment for college. I knew I wanted to make something with music I normally didn't listen to, so I went with the song Hell Above Water by the band Curve.
Right away I knew I didn't want to make the conventional music video. I wanted to express the aggressiveness of the song through simplicity, thus came the idea of just a womam on screen, raw, and nothing else.
Through making this music video, I wanted to subtly show the effect of self censorship. The woman is naturally fading away, but denies and fights it until she finally accepts it in the end. This is represented by what people perceive as how to be a good person. She realizes in the end that thinking and acting differently is not a bad thing, and accepts who she is, regardless of what is expected of her.
The woman in the video is my younger sister. And no, she was not topless when shooting this.
Very masterfully done, simple is better in a lot of cases and you’ve truly shown it here.
I first saw this video on youtube and i was really impressed with the video editing. But now that i’ve come to your site and read the description on the interpretation of it, i think you did an excellent job; i can really see how it represents a struggle of what people thing you should be and what you really are. Bravo! Btw, what was the final grade on the assignment?
The special affects are professionally done, but I didn’t see anything visual to compare to any water and/or anything about hell (FIRE or FLAMES). Maybe next time you will do better. For now, stick to web design.
I think you’re reading into the lyrics a bit too literally…
